Truckee, CA – TTUSD’s Alder Creek Middle School has been selected by the California State Superintendent as one of California’s 2015-2016 Schools to Watch-Taking Center Stage model middle schools. Alder Creek Middle School serves sixth through eighth-grade students in the Tahoe Truckee Unified School District. The Schools to Watch program uses a competitive, rigorous review process to identify high performing, high impact middle schools so that all middle schools may have models of real-world success. Only 11 schools were selected, statewide this year. “We are extremely honored to have received this recognition,” said Principal Hien Larson. “Our students and staff work very hard in rigorous and engaging middle school program and consistently demonstrate outstanding student achievement. This award is an affirmation of the excellent work underway in our school, district, and community.” This spring, on April 26, 2016, at 1:40 p.m. students, staff, parents, district leaders, school board members and community members will celebrate the selection of Alder Creek Middle School as one of California’s 2015-2016 Schools to Watch-Taking Center Stage model middle schools. The celebration will feature an address to the student body on their school’s selection as a model and the presentation of a banner. Dr. Irvin Howard, Co-director of California’s Schools to Watch-Taking Center Stage program, noted, “Alder Creek Middle School is a model of what an outstanding middle school can be. Since 1994, millions of dollars have been raised in pennies and other spare change by more than 10 million elementary, middle and high school students throughout the country. The funds, collected during a three-week period, benefit The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Everyone who participates is a winner! Students across the country are collecting pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters during the Pennies for Patients campaigns benefiting the Society. In the Pennies for Patients campaign, the class collecting the most change in each school receives a pizza party. Prizes such as computers, electronics and sports equipment are presented to the top schools in each area. The Pennies for Patients campaign began in the Society's North Carolina Chapter in 1995.
